According to a blog post also released by Twitter, the reason for the change is actually pretty simple: Their research concludes that people actually tweet more when they have leftover characters in their tweets: “Our research shows us that the character limit is a major cause of frustration for people Tweeting in English… also, in all markets, when people don’t have to cram their thoughts into 140 characters and actually have some to spare, we see more people Tweeting.”
They are going to try out a longer limit, 280 characters, in languages that are impacted by cramming (except for Japanese, Chinese, and Korean).
The test will begin in small groups around the world. The company has not said whether it will roll the change out to all users in the future.
